Securing a Home for KVML: A Word from Lewis Black

I think it is important that Kurt Vonnegut and his work should have a permanent home. I remember visiting the first incarnation of the museum and how simple and profound its exhibits were. A new, forever home would give the organization the possibility of presenting even more exhibitions, artwork, programs, classes, concerts, and, of course, stand-up comedy!

Residents win by learning more about Kurt and his writing. Visitors win by getting to know Kurt's Indianapolis. And the local economy wins when Vonnegut fans and Vonnegut neophytes gather at this new museum and library to learn about and support those ideals that Kurt felt were so very important: veterans, mental health, common decency, humor, the environment, and more.

What is extraordinary is that we don't need a ton of money to make this happen, but we do need money. If we can raise a million dollars by May 15, we are well on our way to making this museuma reality. A million dollars for a museum ... that's less than the cost of a one-bedroom apartment in New York City!

Speaking of which, you can join me and my friends at my favorite spot in New York, the West Bank Café, at 407 West 42nd Street on May 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. for a special Vonnegut fundraising event. The more the merrier! Tickets are $250 and $500, or you can give more if you are feeling generous.

If you can't be there, I truly believe that there are 2,000 people in every state who were profoundly affected by the wise words of Kurt Vonnegut. If each of you sent in a $10 check (what you might send to a presidential candidate who hasn't even won a primary yet), we could raise all the money we need! Mr. Vonnegut had a huge influence on my life. He made me feel less crazy in a world I saw as very crazy. For that I am eternally grateful. I want to help pass his legacy on.

A Night with Lewis Black and Friends to Benefit the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library

Join Lewis Black, Nanette Vonnegut, David Brancaccio, Dan Simon, and Julia Whitehead, the Founder and CEO of the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library (KVML) for a reception to benefit the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library on May 1st from 6-8 p.m. at West Bank Café in Manhattan. Hear their entertaining thoughts on Vonnegut while you learn about the exciting developments for the only museum in the world dedicated to honoring the legacy of Kurt Vonnegut while advocating for free expression and common decency.

KVML houses Vonnegut's personal artifacts, including his typewriter, reading glasses, Purple Heart, artwork, and more. The organization is not just a museum, it works directly with prisoners, veterans, teachers, students, free speech advocates, general readers, and others to create a special community of socially conscious do-gooders and rabble-rousers.

KVML must raise $1 million by May 15th to engage in the other funding discussions that will help the organization buy its dream building and perform the build-out needed to open to the public in September. KVML is undertaking a "50-State Strategy" to engage audiences all over the country in support of this important national cause.

Here in the year of the 50th Anniversary ofSlaughterhouse-Five, the year that KVML is giving away 86,000 copies of the book to Indiana students, come show your support for the man who made your formative years better, Kurt Vonnegut.
